We did it!!! We are finally in, no longer homeless, and we are homeowners!!!! 🙂 Woohoo!!! Monday night, it was quite the adventure, but nevertheless… We made it.
We closed at around 4pm, but by the time we grabbed lunch, loaded our mattress in the car, and got to the house, it was about 6pm. So many crazy emotions! Like, Wow, this is ours!…. Wow, there are SO MANY mosquitoes! … Oh my goodness, we are living here now!!!!!!!!!!
Enter the house… and our nostrils are assaulted by the smell of cat urine.. everywhere. I can’t we didn’t know already, but boy, it smelled awful. The original plan was to try and live the carpet as-is for a while to save up for new flooring. But, after several minutes in that smell we decided it all had to go, that night. So we spent our first evening as home-owners ripping out carpets and padding, coughing because our noses were in so much pain, and attempting to bring some feeling of ‘clean’ to the house.
I have concluded that the previous homeowners just never cleaned. They never did, not once. Everything is nasty. So we tried to prioritize last night. While Jake ripped up carpet I attempted to sanitize the bathroom so it could be usable. Let me just say… that toilet and I are now acquainted on an intimate level. I started scrubbing at some stains on the toilet and quickly realized that in fact they were caked on poop spots. blegh..ghllghhg… blehhh! (I promise I usually right about nice, pretty stuff… sorry for all this nast!)
Even after ripping up most all of the carpet, there may still be an odor in the subfloor… We will see. I did read that priming the subfloor is pretty effective at sealing odors in though, anyone have experience with this?
We picked the kitties up last night and they are very happy to be reunited with us. Hopefully, they like it here and aren’t too mad at us for boarding them for a whole week! This is how Pumpkin originally felt about the move:
But, I think she will come around and eventually love this place! Maybe once it no longer smells and is covered in layers of grime….
It’s all part of the process though, and I think we are going to really enjoy tackling these projects together… Even though we felt nasty and could hardly breath that first night, Jake said, This is fun right? And I said, Yes it is 🙂
