Old Fashioned Honey Crisp Apple Pie

I’ve been meaning to make apple pie ever since our orchard visit.  It’s Jake’s favorite dessert, so it’s a must-have for fall!  The last time we made a pie together and it was awful.  Just a sugar-water goop.  I promise this is a much improved version! 😉

After divvying up our apples, somehow we came home with only honey crisps.  Honey crisps are by far my favorite apple, but we had also picked some cooking apples anticipating using them in a pie.  I was a little worried about using this variety in a pie.  In the end, I couldn’t have been happier, I think they add that perfect sweetness!  See below for my honey crisp apple pie recipe.

I based my recipe off of this one, but made some modifications of my own.  For the pie crust, I was able to find some ready-made crusts in the freezer aisle of Trader Joe’s.  Score!  I’m sure I could make the crusts, but I’m all about making things easier and more efficient, and this saved me a lot of time.  (Tip: Let them adjust to room temperature for at least 1.5 hours)

  1. We love this recipe and want to make large batches of it to can. Do you have any recommendations on how to do this? Thanks so much!

  2. I was looking for a honey crisp apple pie recipe and came across this one. I just made it and it’s GORGEOUS. Everyone rushed through dinner so they could have the pie. Unfortunately the top was perfect but the bottom was doughy and the inside was super runny. Regardless, the taste was out of this world. I just want to figure out what I did wrong? I used a convection oven…not sure if that was the issue or I just didn’t leave it in long enough. Everyone enjoyed it and my fiancé who LOVES only apple pie said it was one of the best tasting he’s had.

  3. Ever since I found your recipe for this pie in 2014, it’s the only apple pie recipe I ever use. I follow it exactly & it’s always fabulous. I appreciate you posting it, thank you so much. It always gets rave reviews whenever I make it.

  4. Are you cooking the ingredients and apples before putting in crust? Are you tossing the apples in the mixed ingredients or just pouring ingredients over the apples that are in the pie pan?

  5. Made this recipe as my very first apple pie and made with honeycrisp apples…and it’s the only recipe I will ever use!! Thank you very much!!!

  6. This was the best apple pie we’ve ever tasted ! I made it with only one change which was half white and half brown sugar. It was phenomenal. Thank you !!

  7. I tried this recipe with the Honeycrisp apples and it was fabulous despite the apples that were supposed to be just for apple pie I thought this was really sweet I used a Marie Callender’s deep dish crust which was so much better than the roll out pie shells it seems to go faster than any other pie I’ve made. Great taste ..Thanks again PS I did add a teaspoon of Molina vanilla and also an eighth of a teaspoon of mace.

    1. Ooh those flavors sound wonderful, and thanks for the Marie Callender’s tip. I will definitely try that next time 🙂

    1. I’ve never personally dealt with that variable before. I would think that the ingredients and amounts should stay the same, but your cooking time may be a little less 🙂

      1. I’m just asking because the last recipe I used in Missouri and the pies came out perfectly. I used the same recipe in a higher altitude and the resulting pie came out far from perfect. I’m still trying to get used to baking here and I’ve been here for over two years.

      1. Everyone enjoyed the texture, the flavor and the SIZE. Honeycrisps are my favorite apple to eat raw and now to bake. Thanks for an easy recipe.

    1. I haven’t baked in years. Don’t laugh but I just recently discovered Honey Crisp Apples and became addicted to them lol.
